Getting to Grips with Uni
As my inevitable first day drew closer and closer, my initial gut feelings were a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty, as I had little clue of what life in University was going to be like. I had learned to become more independent than I was before at college, but for university I understood right away I needed to do more than just show up and do work. I felt that my Secondary School site was tiny compared to my College's grounds, but the latter has been thoroughly dwarfed by the gargantuan University campus. One of my biggest concerns was the amount of time I would have to spend every day obtaining transport. It was calculated I'd need to be out the door by 7:00 AM to catch a bus to take me to university. I also wouldn't be home until well into the night. This would restrict extra-curricular activities and basic needs such as socialising, spending time with my family and taking time off my course to pursue my other interests. Thankfully we were able to obtain a car for my father to drive during the summer holidays which means this concern has been alleviated. Another pressing issue which had to be dealt with as soon as it came up were the new challenges prevalent with my course choice of Computer Science with Games Development. I hadn't touched Maths since my last year in secondary school and managed to scrape by with a B grade in my exams. Fortunately, I, like many of my fellow students taking this course who are not confident with Maths, have been signed to do a Maths elective which is specially geared towards Computer Science, and through careful note-taking over the first few weeks, I understand much more than I previously did. Aside from the Mathematics aspect of Computer Science, in my first month of University I have also learnt the backbone computer language and can now make simple command-line based programs from scratch. In my spare time I have signed up to the University's gym to keep in shape as our local gymnasium decided to shut without warning, and I have also elected to hone my skills of French, which I have learned over the past few years in school and college through reading books and using online services. On the whole, I'm satisfied with the outcome of everything so far and am grateful for the opportunities I have been presented with.
